Franklin Lakes is located just 25 miles from New York City and although the town covers almost 10 square miles, still feels like the small country town it was just after World War II.
Franklin Lakes experienced very rapid growth in the early 1960's with the extension of Route 208 and the future plans for Highway Route 287. Today, the town is home to over 10,000 residents, nine churches, one synagogue, 3 elementary schools, one middle school and 2 high schools. The Mayor and Council did a wonderful job in the last 40 years of retaining the very attractive country feel of Franklin Lakes, offering acre zoning, but at the same time benefiting greatly from having a number of corporate campus headquarters, most notably Becton Dickinson and formerly IBM. The town offers two private country clubs which focus around very attractive private lakes. The town also offers its own semi-private golf club. Shopping too is convenient and there are a number of gourmet restaurants available for fine dining.
Franklin Lakes was ranked by Forbes Magazine as one of the most affluent and lovely communities in 2005. Most of the homes here are priced well over one million dollars and are very upscale and luxurious. The town offers townhome communities, rental properties and older more modestly priced antique style homes.
Franklin Lakes is one of Bergen County's most desirable places to live and raise a family and definitely worth a visit if North Jersey is on your house-hunting list.
