In 2008, Ho Ho Kus, New Jersey celebrated its 100th year as an incorporated borough, but the history of this tiny hamlet can be traced back to the late 1600's when it was referred to in a land deed as Hoghakas. Peacefully coexisting with the Lenni Lenape Indians, the first settlers were from the Netherlands and England. During its earliest colonial days, Ho-Ho-Kus and the tavern on Franklin Turnpike, now known as the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn, was the first stage coach stop on route from Hoboken to Albany. About one mile north of the Inn stands The Hermitage. Built in the early 1700's, it was here General George Washington spent time in 1778 and was also where Aaron Burr courted and married Theodosia Prevost. The Hermitage was also home to the first golf club in New Jersey and, after moving to several locations, is known today as the Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus.

Today, Ho-Ho-Kus is a wonderful residential enclave with the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook and the Saddle River running through it. Its proximity to these waters allowed early development of mills and other businesses using the power generated by the flowing water. Remnants from the Sylvan Lake dam still remain across from the today's Post Office as a reminder of the boroughs storied past.

Heavily treed winding streets create wonderful neighborhoods throughout the borough. Evident wherever you look, there is a justifiable pride all residents have of their town and Ho Ho Kus homes they live in. This can also be said about the various organizations that make up this town. For a small borough of just 1.6 square miles, it is amazing how many different volunteer and social groups function within the community. Their pride extends to both the K-8 Ho-Ho-Kus Elementary School on Lloyd Road and Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale. No one could ask for finer facilities or better faculty than at both these schools.

The Ho-Ho-Kus / Saddle River, New Jersey, Recreation Association is a very active group of dedicated parents from both towns organizing after school sports programs. These include lacrosse, football, baseball, basketball, softball, and soccer. They play various towns throughout Bergen County.

To own Ho Ho Kus real estate is to be part of the community. Everyone eventually finds themselves involved with one town function or another. With events like Ducky Derby, the annual rubber duck race down the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook in late spring, the Contemporary Club's 5K "Richards Run", or the window painting contest held just before Halloween, you know this town is all about quality of life, its children, and maintaining core family values.
