The area that is now Mahwah was incorporated in 1944. It is a 26.7 square mile ideal suburban community situated to take advantage of the natural beauty of the picturesque Ramapo Mountains and the crystal clear Ramapo River. Mahwah, better known as "Bergen County's Parkland", is home to several State and County Parks and Reservations on almost 5000 acres of county and state parkland, offering hiking, skiing, snowboarding, biking, archery, swimming and fishing. Campgaw Mountain Reservation is a 1374 acre wooded county park offering many hiking trails and campsites. In the winter the Ski center has snowmaking and includes 8 trails, 5 lifts and a Visitor Center.Darlington County Park is a 178 acre park offering 3 lakes for fishing and swimming, picnic areas, playgrounds, tennis courts and a wildlife center.  Bergen County's Darlington 18 Hole Golf Course is located in Mahwah and is open to the public from mid March through mid December.
   As the largest municipality in Bergen County, Mahwah has more open space than any other town in the county. As a result of proper planning, it has been able to keep up with its growing population of over 26,000 residents and still retain its suburban setting. It has a wide range of housing including charming cape cods, stately historic homes, townhouse and condominium communities and million dollar mansions. Mahwah has been able to keep its small town character while attracting commercial enterprises. Many large corporations call Mahwah their corporate home.
   Mahwah is 30 miles from New York City, has easy access to air, rail and road transportation. Interstate 287 and Route 17 merge in Mahwah. New Jersey Transit rail service to Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan and Shortline Bus Service is available from several locations. Mahwah is bordered by the towns of Upper Saddle River, Ramsey, Allendale, Wyckoff, Franklin Lakes, Oakland and Ringwood in New Jersey and Suffern in New York.
   Mahwah's unique municipality is comprised of 5 sections, each with a distinct personality of its own. There is the long established section known as Cragmere Park consisting of residential homes only, West Mahwah largely residential, Mahwah proper considered the town center containing many businesses, the Post Office and Police Station, Fardale and Masonicus formally known as farming and residential areas, now containing single family homes and condominium developments.
    Mahwah provides its residents with an excellent school system comprised of 3 primary schools pre-k-3, a grade 4-5 primary school, 6-8 middle school, and a 9-12 high school, a  dedicated Police Force and Emergency Service volunteer program, professional Municipal Government staff, diversified recreational program all creating a safe, secure and comfortable environment in which to live and work.
   Mahwah is home to Ramapo College, a well regarded 4 year Liberal Arts college offering many cultural and sporting events open to the public.
   Mahwah has much to be proud of. The March 2008 New Jersey Monthly Magazine "Top 100 Places To Live in New Jersey" ranks Mahwah 9th in the entire state of New Jersey and number 1 in Bergen County.
